How lit are you?!

Excerpt from my book: Buried to Bold (available in my shop link)

"Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your father which is in Heaven." Matthew 5:16

So I've been doing some "soul searching" and trying to figure out what kind of light I am to this world. Yeah, yeah I show kindness, I'm nice to everyone (or at least I try to be), etc; but am I really shining my light before men that they may see my good works and glorify my Father in heaven? I did a little research on light in the natural sense to try and bring it into the spiritual sense.

I'll begin with a strobe light. Strobe lights are commonly used in night clubs and parties alike. When a strobe light is illuminating (shining), you definitely know it. It has to be seen, you really can't miss it. In fact, strobe lighting is fun, but you can't see clearly. It can even trigger someone with epilepsy to have a seizure. I wonder if I am a strobe light for God? Do I have to be seen and heard? All for show and fun when it comes to being a light for God, but the people can’t see clearly? Am I the life or light of the party? Can the world determine a clear separation between them and myself? Am I causing spiritual seizures? "Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you," 2 Corinthians 6:17 "what fellowship has light with darkness", 2 Corinthians 6:14

Am I a LED Light? LED lights are SUPER bright and lasts a LONG TIME. They also save a lot of energy. Sometimes you even need an LED lighting specialist to help you select the right LED products for the job. Not every LED light suits every job. Am I so bright, that I'm blinding the people of God? Am I so bright that I’ve become self-righteous? Do I feel that since I’ve “lasted longer” or been in church longer than most, that I feel my light shines brighter? Have I started to think that I am a LED lighting specialist and can tell others what is or isn’t their job in the church? For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." Ephesians 2:8-9 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" Romans 3:23

Am I a black light? Black lights are ultraviolet or infrared radiation, invisible to the eye. Black lights may look just like normal fluorescent lamps or incandescent lightbulbs, but they do something completely different. Switch one on, and white clothes, teeth and various other things glow in the dark. Do I dress, talk, look and act like any other light for God, but do something different? Do I shine in darkness only to reveal the flaws in others? "And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not (darkness has not overcome it)" John 1:5.

Am I an incandescent light? Incandescent light is an electric light with a wire filament heated to a high temperature, by passing an electric current through it, until it glows with visible light. Incandescent lights have been around since the light bulb was invented. It is a very old source of light. It HAS TO BE HEATED before it shines. As of 2014, incandescent lights are banned and illegal in the U.S. because they take up too much energy. Have I been in the church so long that I have to be heated in a “hot” church service for my light to shine? Do I have to be heated up (angry) about something that offends God to shine for Him? Do I have to be heated by a cause or mission for Him in order to be a light for Him? Is my light taking so much to be heated, that I'm draining the energy out of the people of God: Do I come and sit like a “bump on a log” in church services and barely participate; Barely speak to people; Don’t want to be bothered? I don't want to be banned by God!

Am I a flashlight? A flashlight is a portable, hand-held electric light. Usually, the source of the light is a small incandescent light bulb or LED bulb. Flashlights can be taken everywhere you go. Flashlights can be turned on and off easily. Flashlights have a short lifespan because they’re battery-powered, so they need recharging.

Do I take my light everywhere I go? Do I have a little incandescent or LED qualities in me (bright, but need to be heated)? Can my light easily be turned on and off? Do I constantly have to be recharged in order to shine for God? "So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth." Revelation 3:16

Am I a Candle Light? A candle is an ignitable wick embedded in wax or another flammable solid substance such as tallow that provides light, and in some cases, a fragrance. It can also be used to provide heat. Am I embedded in a solid substance: my relationship with God? God’s Word? Holiness and Truth? Am I flammable? Do I not outshine anyone, but am bright enough to serve my God-given purpose? Am I such a beautiful light to the people, that I produce a Godly fragrance (Spirit) (pleasant or sweet smell [Spirit]) when they’re in my presence, but also provide heat (on fire for God and a holy example) to them?

Which light are you? Which light do you want to be?
